Certificates of Indian Status (Status Cards)

Status cards are issued only to registered (status) Indians. If you have been notified
by Indian Affairs that you are now registered, you can obtain your status card
in person from:

• the membership officer at your First Nation’s Band office (at the bottom of this page is contact information for the Bands Killarney people are registered with)

OR

• the membership officer at any Indian Affairs office (see contact info below)

Bring with you two pieces of identification — one should have your photo on it. If you received a letter from the Registrar notifying you that you are now registered, bring it with you. It states your registry number. This number identifies you, your family group, and the Band to which you belong. You will not need to bring a separate photo of yourself if you visit an Indian Affairs or Band office. They will take your picture there.

If you have been registered with Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve, you may also apply for your status card by mail. Contact the Band office for an application form (see their address and telephone number below). Fill out the form, and include a photo of yourself sized to the dimensions they require. You will also need to send a photocopy of two pieces of identification, at least one with your photo on it.

Gas Cards for Status Indians

Gas cards are issued by Ontario’s Ministry of Finance. This card allows status Indians
to purchase gasoline tax-free from any gas station on a reserve in Ontario.

To obtain a gas card, fax a letter to the Ministry of Finance, stating that you are
applying for a card to purchase gasoline on reserve (see the contact info below). In your letter, include:

• the date
• your name, address, & telephone no.
• the name of your First Nation
• your registry number
• a photocopy of the front and back of your status card
• your signature

(Your Registry number is shown on the front of your status card, at the bottom.)

Health Care Benefits for Status Indians

Health Canada’s First Nations and Inuit Health Branch offers various types of noninsured health benefits, such as:

• a variety of prescription drugs
• some non-prescription drugs

• vision care, such as…eye examinations, eyeglasses and eyeglass repairs
• medical equipment/supplies, such as…hearing aids, wheelchairs, walkers, bandages, custom footwear

above. Some additional benefits are decided on a case-by-case basis.

You may claim health-care expenses that would have been covered by the Health

Indian Affairs notifying you that you are now a registered Indian.
