Who does MNO actually represent?
How many members of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) were accepted into the organization on the basis of their white ancestor’s occupation? Which occupations did MNO claim were signs of a white ancestor’s “ties” to a Métis community?
Background on the Métis National Council
In 2018, there were five organizations in the Métis National Council (MNC):
Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF)
Métis Nation Saskatchewan (MNS)
Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC)
Métis Nation Alberta (MNA)
Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO)
In 2018, the Métis Nation of Ontario was put on probation by the Métis National Council. One of the conditions for lifting the probation required MNO to re-register its members, using the national definition of “Métis”.
The MNC eventually established an Expert Panel to “review the history of the seven Ontario communities through the lens of the National Definition and contemporary Métis governance”.
By the time the Expert Panel's Final Report was submitted to the MNC, three organizations had resigned from it. Only two members remain: Otipemisiwak Métis Government (formerly called Métis Nation Alberta) and the Métis Nation of Ontario.
